Prof. Swisher embraces her role as a mentor and role model outside of the classroom, and has many years of experience supporting diversity in electrical engineering and STEM. She is involved with the local University of Minnesota chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and is the Faculty Advisor for the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE). In the past, she has enjoyed many opportunities to volunteer for organizations that empower young women by promoting science literacy, she has delivered hands-on lesson demonstrations to elementary school classrooms, and she helped lead a conference teaching students from economically disadvantaged high schools that STEM can empower them to make a positive global impact. Prof. Swisher is part of a group of Science and Engineering professors that present the “Energy & U” show, a high-energy semi-annual event bringing more than 10,000 elementary school students to the University of Minnesota to excite them about pursuing a career in STEM.
